    Congrats!

    If not done already (really? what were you thinking in the past few months?) those are to urgently be put on your todo list:

    • Collect awesome bedtime stories, to read her.
      You will need a lot of them and you will also need to be more than happy… Happy? Who am I kidding? That’s not enough, you will need to be madly in love with reading her the same story, over and over again. And dare not change a single word in it, you cruel monster :p
    • Don’t wait to immediately start collecting books for her to read all by herself, once she is old enough to do so. The sooner the better.
      And don’t limit that collection to contemporary kids books: make her red some children classics, and then some ‘classic classics’. Teach her to love books, aka to be fine with dropping one she is not interested in: reading is supposed to be fun, not a duty and certainly not feel like a homework.
      And if you’re not much of a reader yourself, now is probably the best time to start practicing: you can ask for help at your local library, they will more than happily suggest some great titles ;)
    • If they did not get the memo, make it clear by her parents you will demand your natural uncle’s rights to be respected and that you’re willing to have them enforced by the law if required to. For example, your undisputed right to take her around to visit cool places (even when she will be supposed to go to school). Or, and that will happen much quicker than you can imagine, your right to find her good excuses for whatever she just did she was not supposed to do (not that nieces are subject to such behavior, obviously).
      In my own list, I added the right to teach her to swear in as many languages as I speak and, in all modesty, I can honestly say I think I did not do too bad of a job at that specific task.
    • Have fun together because she will grow up so quickly it’s frightening.

    Oh, yeah, I almost forgot: congratulate her parents too. Even though you will do the real hard work for the years to come, they too deserve some participation credits :p ;)
