I was wondering, what people would actually do in that situation. Its somewhat expectable thing in some horror games, but i dont think i have seen the concept explored in this light.
Lets say you get an emergency message to your phone, the one they use to inform people of things like toxic chemical spills, accidents and everything. The message informs you to stay indoors and expressively says that you should not look outside no matter what, but does not clarify further why. And the message is repeated enough times that its clear its not joke/hoax/error.
What would you do?
I’d probably use my phone.
If the moon is out, I would stay indoors, block all moonlight from entering, and break all of my mirrors. Not falling for that again.

If they don’t explain why, then that’s suspicious. I’d think that someone hacked the emergency alert system for some kind of ARG or joke.
Interestingly if you look outside you immediately lose the game!
Like in “Asylum”, where you got the message “A piano falls from above, crushing you to death.” whenever you looked up…

My first question would be: who sent this?
I feel like statistally you’re more likely to get a coup and the coup plotters and trying to prevent civillian resistance as in “please do not notice these collumns of tanks trying to takeover, totally nothing nefarious happening, nothing to see here citizen, move along” than some mysterious “if you look outside, you die” movie plot. So I’m probably pulling out the camera to record whats probably a once in a lifetime event.
Roll my eyes and get pissed off that my local TV channel is having technical problems. Again.

I would immediately and involuntarily have looked outside immediately after the first message.
Human instincts are dumb like that.

I don’t think a mirror would help much. I’d imagine it’d be some blinding radiation, think strong lasers or something. A camera feed would probably be okay though.
most types of digital camera sensors are actually super vulnerable to strong EM radiation, like gamma rays. also lasers of any wavelength will definitely burn them out hence the media trope of burning out a security camera with a laser
