  • This isn’t any different from any other automation , so far. Every time there is a new level of automation, someone asks this question. Yes there can be disruption, even a generation or two lost at the level of “Industrial Revolution”, but so far it’s always come back with more jobs, more opportunity.

So what’s different this time? Do you thinks it’s good enough to replace thinking? That was my fear when it looked like self-driving was coming fast, but that fizzled out, and I have Vern blower expectations for this round of generative ai. Sure, it might be transformative to some roles and destructive to the remains of journalism but I don’t see it taking many actual jobs

We’re arguably already in this situation with outsourcing, smart automation, service industries, where there seem to be fewer “middle” jobs. While some of us can be the higher skilled new jobs, way too many new jobs are just not

  • Similar, but I always argued that whatever toxic combination of chemicals they use, is too distant from what most people would call “flavoring”. There was a short period in my teens when I could eat Doritos but they just don’t bear enough resemblance to food. The chemicals mostly burn my mouth and I don’t even know what “cool ranch” is supposed to be flavored like

If I want chips, I’ll get Tostitos Scoops and some fresh Pico de Gallo

Edit: And, yes, I love spicy food but this is more like a chemical burn than a hot pepper

  • Do you know what would really help in emergency? Save more lives? Instead of giving some yahoos a chance to brandish weapons and act out their control fantasies, train concerned citizens with emergency medical, fire and rescue training. Provide vehicles, communication and coordination, to handle evacuations, floods, fires, sudden losses of homes, environmental emergencies to supplement standard emergency personnel when currently the only option is to escalate to National Guard and wait for them to show up.

Imagine if there was arson, being able to help save lives and property, instead of acting out a control fantasy and getting to shoot people

  • This is not going far enough. If you’re pointlessly shot, you don’t have a chance to know whether you saved someone’s life or wasted yours and let the gunman get away, plus you’d rightly be fired for carelessness leading to an unnecessary death. From this tiny amount of detail, it seems like the cop did everything right. He’s got the guy contained and had an opportunity to call it in.

This is not the movies where cops win by disregarding risk and injuries, and somehow never dying: cops win with radios and bringing in more cops.

Hell, if the perpetrator shot in a hurry as described, this cop did save Trump’s life

  • No ads but horrible performance. How is it that a iPhone 15 Pro is too slow to run this web site reliably? Why can it not remember that I’m logged in, or worse, why does it sometimes remember I’m logged in, after deciding I’m not? Why does it use so much storage on my phone? Why does it sometimes get stuck trying to draw the Home Screen?

I mean, it’s much better than Reddit was, and I try not to complain for the price, but it really seems like one of those things where it’s too ambitious and just doesn’t work as well for users. Maybe something simpler would be better
