  • I mean, sure, I could have had a more specific search. I just assumed that DDG was privacy focused and more or less gave the same search results to everyone.

My states midterms happened months ago, and weren’t particularly newsworthy then. Let alone now.

Given the newsworthiness of Michigan, especially, and 4 other states last night, I would have expected to see results skew towards the trending news story as opposed to old, largely irrelevant, results that skew towards knowing who is performing the search.

It’s backwards of my expectations with the product. And based on my understanding of how search engines operate, youvare more likely to catch search engine bias with broad sweeping searches, than you would with hyper specific searches. As an example, this search was able to identify that DDG biases location over relevance/newsworthiness. Which is why I asked about it in the community I did.

I wasn’t complaining about the effectiveness of the search, rather the privacy concerns.

  • New to Lemmy. Is this common from this instance?

I’m no fan of the dem elite, but I’m still a believer that if we’re OK with incremental change and we’re active at all levels of government that we can motivate others to re-engage and take back what’s ours. That doesn’t mean that we wait till we can vote again and try better next time, it means we start creating the society we want to exist. Building up local politicians, and supporting the hell out of places that support us, hell, even supporting the hell out of places that aren’t supporting us right now but have the structure to support us.

  • I hope you’re right!

I’m fairly new to Lemmy. So far, I love the moderation approach of much of Lemmy, “don’t be an assholr and especially dont be a Nazi”.

I think people that come here are attracted to that, they’re also distrustful of social media. It’s a breath of fresh air to come here and be like, “phew, no Nazis” but then you get excited whem you find places like Hexbear, and you’re like, “ooooo openly leftist” and if you’re already distrustful of social media you might believe you’re brainwashed by capitalism and be willing to give the idea of authoritism communism a try because you’ve been lied to about SOME of the left.

Tankie instances make you question reality. Unfortunately, normal instances don’t seem to correct tankies.

Idk, I think of Watership Down a lot. Going from a shitty post capitalistic briar to a Utopia seeming authoritive briar the bunnies kinda find it OK. Until they don’t. Eventually, spoiler alert

    spoiler

__the bunnies and a badass bird do make their perfect briar but it doesn’t really maintain without an educated populace. Something about birds are bunnies too

Idk, I should reread that book. But I think its applicable here
