To me “unbidden” ≠ “intrusive”; in a venn diagram “intrusive” would be a small circle fully contained within a much larger “unbidden” one. Though we go deeply into the question of free will when considering every thought “unbidden”, so I really woupdn’t go that deep ;-)

Mildly Interesting@lemmy.world•The unlikely appeal of barefoot hiking: ‘It makes you feel quite primal’
7·6 days agoI’m another fellow barefoot-indoors-and-minimal-sole-whenever-possible-without-causing-a-ruckus and, yeah, ruckus happens weirdly often…
As someone with mental health issues including intrusive thoughts: Nope, you probably haven’t experienced one if you truly think that. Normal thoughts come and go, and, sure, they may interrupt each other, but an intrusive thought comes into your brain like a fucking tank, crushing and maiming everything in its path, not even considering to leave, and shooting down every attempt to get rid of it violently. You absolutely know it is one…

No Stupid Questions@lemmy.world•What happens if someone refuses to work in a socialist economy?
6·8 days agoYou get thrown into Jail as an “anti-social element” (There’s an important distinction between “unable to work” and “unwilling to work”, both meaning “work” as in “contributing labor to the well-being of your fellow humans”). Also: You clearly don’t know anything about socialism beyond right-wing delusions.
I’ve always enjoyed the thought of a couple cats cooperating to take on a cow lke the raptors in jurassic park, only much closer to the actual size of raptors

Showerthoughts@lemmy.world•I've never met a loud and outspoken atheist that didn't celebrate Christmas.
1·13 days agoWell, I’m married to one (and I only “celebrate” in the sense that it’s a gotta-visit-your-parents-once-a-year-anyway-at least-it-doesn’t-cost-vacation-days opportunity, no presents or anything). Their parents tried “if you don’t go to church then there’ll be no presents either” and, well, not a good tactic when dealing with a stubborn aspie ;-)

Privacy@lemmy.ml•Europol predicts a 2035 with no privacy, robot police, robots displacing workers, debates about "robot rights" and criminals commanding hundreds of drones simultaneously
341·28 days ago2035? I’d have argued most of these things are already here or at least trivially close…
no privacy - Corporate overlords have been declaring us “post-privacy” for a looooong-ass time, and Governments and their enforcers have been chomping at the bit for at least as long, because they want in on the game
robot cops - Palantir Gotham plus semi-autonomous drones; It’s a question of degree, not of when.
robots displacing workers - Has literally been happening for more than half a century; The current LLM bullshit is going to give it another push, obviously.
robot rights - Well, are LLM companies just violating copyright or are LLMs simply ordinary artists that learn by looking at other folks art, just like their human forebears? (It doesn’t matter what you think, it matters what we as society ultimately make of that and I wouldn’t be optimistic)
criminals with hundreds of drones - They’ve been running humongous botnets for decades; If they see a business case for doing something drone-wise in meatspace they’ll absofuckinglutely do so today rather than tomorrow, and maybe they already are and we’re just not aware because it’s still flying under the radar.
If you aren’t expecting some variation of full-on Cyberpunk right now I honestly don’t know what you’re waiting for…

Privacy@lemmy.ml•Q: Whatever happened to our promised Signal - WhatsApp compatibility?
2·1 month agoThanks for the clarification.
Well, I’d expect Meta to drag their feet as much as they can, tbh. So: Years and as many “regrettable” technical hiccups and UX inconveniences as they can get away with without having to pay too stiff a fine. Same as always.
I am aware of adverserial interoperability, but, frankly, it’s one of those ideas that make me chuckle benevolently. I don’t see much practical merit in it. As for Facebook getting big that way in the first place: I strongly disagree. They got big by being early, good enough to capture the zeitgeist, and then being as anticompetitve as they could. Just like Microsoft before them, for example.

15·1 month agoWho ever promised that? Just because both use Axolotl/Double Ratchet? hat is far from enough. Not to mention that neither Meta nor Signal Messaging have any economic incentive to do it…

No Stupid Questions@lemmy.world•(serious) What would we be losing in a world where most people didn't own a car? Please read the OP before posting.
5·2 months agoAs an autistic person that can barely cope with public transport (which is good in europe, obviously) and the associated density of humans without having a complete meltdown on a good day, a car greatly increases my mobility and quality of life. Not having one would also mean an increased frequency of grocery shopping (which, again, is quite a challenge most of the time, hence I try to go as rarely as possible) because neither an e-bike nor public transport offer the same carrying capacity. I could likely make do with a cargo bike, but I’d still have to relocate into a more densely populated area to have all the different shops I need (yes, I’m “picky” about what food is safe, what clothes I can bear, etc.) in bike-able distance, which would cost more money for housing and mental energy (“spoons”) to handle the increased population around me. Plus it’d cost a lot of extra time. As much as I’d prefer a car-less world in theory, it’s simply a fact that it’s an assistive technology for me, just like noise-canceling headphones are. I do hope we can move over to decent electrical cars though, no reason to run on fossil fuels (other than cost of the vehicles, and that is rapidly coming down).

Fair :-)
