Yeah, I have a cat who my roommate 13 years ago taught to play with his hand, and let him bite and scratch as hard as he wanted. He would bite hard. It took a while, but I got him to stop by just immobilizing my hand when he started latching on, which made him lose interest and loosen his grip. I’d also give him a high-pitched “ooow” as an audible cue. Once I got my hand out I would poke his nose and say “no bites” then pet him on his forehead. Every once in a while he still regresses, but instead of biting now he almost always just aggressively headbutts your hand.

5·15 days agoThe omnipresence of the internet and its perversion into a tool of the surveillance state would be the most shocking thing to a lot of people, I think. If you told an adult from the early 90s that all of their communications would go through one device that you kept in your pocket and that large corporations and governments were collecting data from it 24/7, they’d shit a brick.
I think a teenager like Marty from today would have a hard time navigating communication in the 90s as well. Like you had to get your hands on the Yellow Pages and use a pay phone or a land line somewhere. People weren’t walking around with cell phones that you could just borrow, and you couldn’t just look someone up with their name on social media and send them a DM. That’s something that I think is much more different 1996 to 2026 than 1955 to 1985.
Same, I had enough people I wanted to have access to it that I didn’t feel like explaining Tailscale to all of them. Also, you can’t easily run Tailscale alongside a regular VPN like Proton or Mullvad. Of course, you have to pay for the domain name and setting up a reverse proxy and appropriate DNS forwarding rules are not trivial tasks.
Tailscale is a pretty good option if said old people have an Android or Apple TV, not sure about availability of Tailscale on any other OSs. Run it on your server and the TV client, grab the Tailscale IP from the dashboard and enter [Tailscale IP]:[Jellyfin port] when the Jellyfin app asks for the server address. You could homebrew a VPN too. Only other option would be a domain name and a reverse proxy.

91·1 month agoIsn’t that how Social Security is supposed to work? In 30 years it’s going to be Gen A paying for millennials. It only has reserves because the trust fund was set up to cover the baby boomers because they knew it was a much larger generation. The trust fund was never intended to be a permanent fixture.

Technology@lemmy.world•Kansas Schools Now Collect Phones at the Door – Spends $180K On Smartphone LockersEnglish
31·2 months agoGo for it. I don’t need any recognition or anything. A couple disclaimers:
1 - I’m not from the area in question, but I work in the public sector overseeing spending, so I thought it was an interesting exercise in understanding the scale we end up dealing with. So my comment is just a demonstration. None of this is actual information about the specific school district’s plans. I’m assuming they must be getting their lockers even cheaper than the ones I found with a quick search, because with my numbers you’re blowing past $180k pretty quickly once you scale it up to the whole district.
2 - I used this site for the student population. I didn’t cross-reference it or anything, so I have no idea how accurate it is. It states 5788 total enrollment, with 31.2% at Campus High School, so that’s where I got the 1800 students. It looks like the district serves multiple southwestern suburbs of Wichita, which makes a little more sense since the total population of Haysville itself is under 12k.

Technology@lemmy.world•Kansas Schools Now Collect Phones at the Door – Spends $180K On Smartphone LockersEnglish
64·2 months agoFollowed some links and did some googling. The school district in question is USD-261 in Haysville, Kansas. The high school should have about 1800 students, so they would need 67 of these cell phone lockers. The price for 6+ is $1510, but let’s knock another $110 off since they’re buying 11 times that many, so $1400. That’s $93,800, for just the high school, and that’s before we talk about where the hell you’re going to put 67 of those things, and who you’re going to pay to install them and do any necessary renovations to accommodate them.

51·2 months agoFor me, 4 really nailed the mechanical gameplay. It felt good to speed around the streets and get in gun fights in a way that none of the others have before or after. I know there’s a large contingent that feels the same way, so I’m hoping R* has been paying attention and goes back in that direction for 6. GTA 5 had superior environments and story, but it just didn’t feel as good to play.

8·2 months agoAOC says millennials aren’t punk kids anymore? No shit. I haven’t been a punk kid for 20 years. Even Gen Z aren’t kids anymore. There are a few of them that are already managers at my workplace. Insane how US mainstream culture has held space for boomers for so long. So frustrating how unserious we’re considered to be when we’ve been the ones on the ground making shit happen for the last decade or more. Shout out to Gen X for never having been taken seriously.

4·3 months agoThese people are eugenicists. They are trying to kill us. The ones they can’t kill will have their wealth siphoned from them to fund this balooning, kleptocratic federal deficit. They are looting the near-dead body of the empire so they can transcend nations, and us, the blood, flesh and bones, will be left to rot. We have one, maybe two chances left to defeat these people peacefully.

The writing this season is a little too on the nose…

Look up the Powell Memo. There has been a 50 year project to dismantle government oversight of business with the aim of maximizing profits and externalizing costs and we are near its conclusion. Primarily the work of this project has been done by judges hand-picked for their ideological commitment, often through the Federalist Society. A good, more recent example is when Obama attempted to increase the salary cutoff where employers must pay overtime wages from $23k to $46k per year. Employers would just call their employees managers and get around the Davis Bacon Act and not have to pay OT to people making over $23k, even if those people were doing work that would otherwise be wage labor. A business lobbying group challenged the rule and found a federal judge in East Bumfuck, Texas who put a hold on it, and then it was killed by Trump. Democrats have effectively been controlled (via the judiciary) opposition since the 90s, but I have some hope that there are more Democrats coming up who understand what needs to be done. There is power in Congress and the White House to do something about all this, Democrats just need to wield it as freely as the Republicans do when they take power. The Biden administration was actually decent at this stuff. It’s a shame he was senile by the end and too proud to give up power to another Democrat that would have stood a chance, until it was way too late, anyway.
