I found CachyOS while trying to figure out the best OS for my handheld. Was on bazzite before that. I ended up loving it so much I installed it on my laptop and desktop too.

4·7 days agoI haven’t committed to doing it full time, but I’ve had a GPD Win Max 2 for a few months now. A little 10 inch laptop that actually has solid new AMD internals. Love it so far

3·7 days agoI bet it’ll be more like a subscription for an LLM upgrade, since they’re shoving “AI” into the OS, it’ll need a bit of local processing power but then you pay to connect it to a beefier server

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•Those who have moved residences, do you still remember all the places you've been, do you feel anything about it when remembering it or looking at street views? Do you feel sentinmental about it?
5·12 days agoI’ve lived in 9 different states (US) and I’m only in my early 30s. Let me count the actual different addresses I’ve had… 19. And I didn’t even count different college dorms as different addresses. I remember them all, but space and time are a blur. I don’t really ‘belong’ anywhere any more, and I don’t feel sentimental about any of them.
Edit: got bored and mapped it out. If I wanted to go on a road trip and visit all the different cities, it would be a ~5,500 mile (~8,850 km) trip, optimized for shortest path

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•What's the story behind your username and avatar?
2·1 month agoI really liked watching B-grade 90s-00s SciFi movies with my dad when I was a kid. That was the name of one that came out around the time I made a reddit account, I don’t know if I ever even watched it, it just sounded like a good username. Reminds me, I should probably make a new lemmy account that’s not tied to the same name

4·1 month agoSounds like SEE (single event effect) if it’s something fixable by software.
TID (total ionizing dose) is another flavor of radiation effect on components, but that’s a total lifetime effect where it slowly degrades. Using rad hard parts or adding extra shielding is the main fix.
SEEs are transient effects from high energy charged particles that can cause bit flips and latch ups in circuitry depending on where the particle hits and deposits it’s charge in the circuitry. Extra shielding can help prevent these as well, but they can also be mitigated in software, sometimes the fix is just error detection, or power cycling a specific section of circuitry to clear a latchup
Except I get water. I just want water, with no ice
I only see pH 1 in the cupboard, guess I’ll just have to chug 14 L of it today

2·2 months agoFond memories of trying out every single glitch I could find for Pokemon Gens I and II. A lot were a load of crap, but there were a few good ones
My favorite was the Pokemon cloning glitch in Gen 2. If you did it right, you could get all 3 starters and force your rival to have the starter of your choosing. It took a couple hours to do though, because it requires saving right before you get your starter and then not saving again until you’re allowed to catch your first Pokemon. And then repeating the process.

Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•What's a service you’ve been using forever that hasn’t enshitified?
6·2 months agoI swear I ran into a problem with IMDb having some basic stuff like “what has this actor been in recently” stuck behind their IMDbPro paywall at some point in the last couple years.
But I just went and checked a few movies and shows, can’t seem to replicate that issue anywhere.
I either hallucinated it, or they rolled back the enshittification after seeing a drop in traffic, not sure
No thanks. I’ve lived in 6 different US states in the past 6 years. I understand I’m an extreme edge case, but I’m a huge fan of renting apartments at this stage in my life.
Now maybe in this hypothetical society with better housing and whatnot, I wouldn’t have felt the need to hustle and grind and work my way up the corporate ladder and move around as much as I did… But for my situation, yea I like renting

For reference, if you can physically feel an ESD (electrostatic discharge) event, aka shock, then it’s at probably least 3kV, could be 10+ kV. But they’re incredibly short duration transients, on the order of microseconds.
