the thing with Waters is that he’s an oldschool conspiracy nut - so for every reasonable point he makes about 50-100 bullshit points that negate one good point he makes every now and then. He could’ve said stopped at ceasefire without elaborating and it would’ve been naive but benign - but he decided to elaborate and it was downhill.

I knew it was over for Sheeran when I read his excuses post on social media and he included a paragraph that started with “I am not complicit.”
If you have to come out publicly to argue you’re not complicit you’re probably complicit.
He is, too, he really both-sides’ed the whole situation and went on to do the tour even after every other act pulled out.

Waters thinks that when the war started in Ukraine, Biden should’ve called Putin and told him to cut it out, because the US is a major world power. Waters thinks (or at least claimed at a concert) that Zelensky should be sitting down and making a deal with Putin for peace, because war is bad so ending it should always be the goal regardless of what you lose or give up… He didn’t say that last part, that’s me being uncharitable.

I think it’s more “very successful in a public-facing high exposure field” rather than generally very succesful in a field.
Human beings tend to look up to those who are famous and, IMHO, because many if not most of famous people end up interiorizing on their side of that equation that, since so many look up to them, their opinion is more important than that of other people.
I’m not sure if they end up believing that they know better than others in fields that have nothing to do with their expertise, if they’re just leveraging that human behaviour and their fame to convince people of something they think is important, or even if they’re publicly opiniating in controversial subjects purelly to get more media attention because in their domain more public attention turns into more $$$ for them, but ultimatelly from the outside all 3 motivations yield the same behavior from the famous and hence look the same.

But the pedant in me hates this saying. It’s almost never true. A clock broken in a very specific way is right twice a day, but how many clocks get broken like that? If they get smashed, and hands fall off, they can’t even show a valid time. Even then, they’re more likely to just run at the wrong speed, which makes it VERY unlikely they’ll show the correct time even once a day. Also most clocks are digital now! If those break, they show nothing!

I have a mechanical wrist watch, so I do know this, but it’s got an automatic winding mechanism and I pretty much never take it off, so I rarely think about winding it except when it drifts too far. I really should have put 2 and 2 together before now. It never occurred to me to check that people were using the idiom correctly.

Sheeran cancelling Macklemore’s involvement in his tour based on the stadium owner’s political views of Macklemore’s political views seems pretty “involved with politics” to me. He was definitely put in a situation where he had to pick a side, but Robert Kraft put him there, not the public who are reacting to his decision-making.
I think the best way for Sheeran to stay above the politics is to simply sit back, say nothing and let his opening acts say whatever they want to say.

Donald Trump was someone people knew from entertainment. The entertainment TV show he was on made people think he was a good businessman or whatever. Do you think Trump successfully converting his notoriety in entertainment into political power was a good thing?
