A CSV is just a long string of text with a few control characters tossed in for end lines. There are practically no rules enforced by the file type itself. You can dump that unsanitized and poorly awk’d data into whatever awful mess you want. Nobody’s stopping you. Sure, excel will force it’s CSV formatting rules on you when you export like a child’s training wheels. But that’s not relevant here.

Mildly Infuriating@lemmy.world•Closing a freeway lane to take picturesEnglish
13·5 days agoIt could have been an accident or incident that resulted in a death. They may have been collecting evidence. There are even some police in my area that uses conventional land surveying equipment and rapid high density laser scanners. Precise measurements of things like skids marks and other evidence of how the vehicles came to rest can be used to estimate initial speeds and confirm or refute the testimony of witnesses.
It could also be something more mundane like an actual land surveyor collecting data to support future design work or verify completed projects.
Neither of these are jobs that can be done at night or at times more convenient for your car.

4·8 days agoYou want mpd to server and play the music, connected with a web front end (there are a few to choose from) accessible on the private store wifi. You should probably serve this frontend only to a certain machine on the network (like the managers computer in the back) and lock everything else out. The last time I ripped CDs on Linux I used whipper, which I believe was the successor to morituri. This is all only legal if the CDs they have already included the licensing fees to play them publicly or are themselves freely licensed. There are sources of freely licensed music out there that you can play publicly without paying.
Nobody else grow up on tuna casserole?
I don’t know the exact recipe, but it was basically canned tuna, frozen mixed vegetables (diced carrots, corn, peas, and Lima beans was the favorite in my house), and macaroni and chees. This all goes into a casserole dish and is cooked somehow (probably overn, I don’t know, child me didn’t worry about such trivialities). The crumbles at the end of a bag of ruffles would be sprinkled over the top of this before baking to add a bit of crunch.
I couldn’t count how many times we ate this growing up. It’s been a few decades, and the nostalgia is real, but I still have no inclination to make it for myself. If lower middle class had a flavor it’s that mélange of canned tuna, fake cheese, and lima beans.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•Do you use a system-default or a custom wallpaper for your personal computer? If custom, what kind of wallpaper & why?
2·12 days agoI’m not complaining, just thought you knew something that I didn’t. That’s why I asked.

2·12 days agoOk, but I can also just choose the color directly and not set an image as a wallpaper. I appreciate your effort, but what is the advantage here to tiling a PNG?

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•What are your favourite halloween+christmas movies?
4·13 days agoThe first Addams Family movie starts with a Christmas scene and so is set during the Christmas season, but clearly has Halloween vibes throughout. The sequel, Addams Family Values, gets even weirder in this kind of holiday mashup vibe. The kids get sent off to a summer camp, where they are doing a thanksgiving play for some reason. So it’s Halloween vibes throughout, with turkeys and pilgrims, but it takes place during the summer.

7·13 days agoAt work, all black, because I prefer working in a darkened room and sometimes I need to use the laptop in sunny conditions full of glare. I have no need of any extra light getting blasted at me not directly related to something I’m working on. Also, I get a kick out of the “Why are your other monitors off?” comments. Also, IT tends to clutter my desktop with a bunch of shortcuts with a hodgepodge of icon styles, it’s a lot easier to visually parse these on a black field.
At home, the media server is directly connected to a TV with HDMI and has a desktop environment. My distributions default wallpapers always come in two varieties, colorful or greyscale. The server automatically logs into a restricted user account for family access to Kodi, retro arch, web browsing, etc., which has the colorful wallpaper. If for some reason I need to get into the admin account with a GUI, the desktop wallpaper is grey. It’s like an always-on simplified color coded whoami. Since I almost never interact with this machine except through ssh or the services it hosts, this is the most amount of ricing I’m willing to do.

Casual Conversation@piefed.social•What is a heavily debated topic in your hobby? Can be anything from the influence of a movie director to the best brand of paint for Warhammer
4·13 days agoNow I’m even more invested. And I’ve absolutely taken sides.

2·13 days agoWhat dissertations? Setting aside interpretation, were there factual errors in that video? I’ve read the books. I’ve now seen the video. The controversy seems to center mostly on a failure of reading comprehension and an ignorance of both literary devices and various uses of the word fly (which is particularly ironic given a certain exclamation made especially popular by the movies).
Now for my controversial take: This “controversy” is pretty emblematic of the many ways the films distorted and mutilated Tolkien’s stories and characters.

More like big squirrels with civilization.
It is amazing foundational science fiction story. Once you’ve read it, you’ll see many of its ideas and themes in many other great works of science fiction literature. Perhaps the most recognizable is as the inspiration for the Ewoks from Star Wars. (In my personal opinion inspiration is a bit of a stretch, Ewoks are pretty much a direct copy.)
I think it’s more like this…
Angel: “Push it over the edge and watch it fall.”
Devil: “Drink from it after giving yourself a thorough self cleaning and leave the area before they notice.”
Just another way to dehumanize.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•What is a useful or interesting product under $100 that you wouldn’t normally think to buy?
4·14 days agoThey work great until they don’t. I’ve had the same experience, be prepared to replace it occasionally because it’s usually near impossible to disassemble and clean the pump mechanism completely.
I use the word pardon because there are lots of local Spanish speakers, tourist/seasonal French Canadian speakers, and occasionally tourists from farther abroad around and I’d rather be understood than pretend everyone speaks English. When speaking to strangers, like when I’m asking forgiveness for being an inconvience to them or trying to politely get someone’s attention, preferring loan words that really don’t need translation in order to be understood just seems like good citizenship and also more kind.

It’s more than simply unfair. It’s theft, wage theft, plain and simple.
