Aunt Wendy + Carolina Reaper = Carp
I can’t stand overly dramatic boomer bullshit like this
My dad loves spicy food, so my mom grows habaneros and jalapenos for him out in her garden. One year she even did some Carolina reapers, but she refused after the first year. When the harvest is winding down, she dehydrates them and grinds them into a powder for him to use as a seasoning.
I made the mistake of visiting them when she was doing that. She was walking around with a mask and goggles and I quickly figured out why. The dehydrator turns the kitchen into a biohazard zone. Like tear gas all throughout.
When I got into dehydrating, I looked up things to dehydrate and man I’m so glad everyone was shouting warnings about not dehydrating peppers in the house, you’d gas yourself out lol
LoL, when I make salsa it involves broiling peppers and it basically makes the entire house feel like you got tear gassed.
Yeah my friend dehydrates and grinds them outside or in his shed depending on the weather.
Thank fuck for the explainer. Looked like white mold growing out of their throat.
Without reading the original, I thought she woke up to a spider web spin in her throat.
Talk about nightmare fuel.
Without context this picture will haunt me for a long time. I hate mold.
With context I have no idea what tf she’s doing.
Is she eating cotton balls?
It’s ice
OH it’s like, her whole mouth, there’s clear parts of the ice too. That makes more sense.
I was also wondering why she was making that face, but to be fair some people can just do that with their lips.
I really don’t see that because nothing else about the mouth makes sense. How would it look like that if it was just her opening her mouth?
When she does it again and again, around the 5th time or so, she’ll discover she is a chilli head.
A few hours later…

Am I the only person who doesn’t have this issue with eating spicy food?
It reminds me of the “hurr durr Taco Bell gives you diarrhea” memes. Like really? Maybe you need to see a doctor?
I personally don’t see any connection between spiciness and stomach/bowel issues.
I think it’s just like the “obvious” answer (“food was spicy, now my tummy hurts, therefore spiciness makes my tummy hurt”), when in reality, at most people are just experiencing a correlation.
Capsaicin can irritate intestines just like it irritates every other mucus membrane. When that happens, they will often decide to speed up the substances trip, which leaves less time for water to be extracted. Other food will get dragged along with the expedited.
So you are left with a spicy, liquidy, morass of poor choices that burns the starfish as its last ‘fuck you’ on the way out.
Doesn’t happen to everyone, but it does happen.
Ever had something so spicy you can feel it snaking it’s way through your guts?
As a frequent spicy eater with IBS, yes. I’ve had:
- Spicy guts
- Ears ringing
- Fire pee
In addition to the usual sweats, hiccups, and fire poops.
Haven’t dealt with hot piss before but I’ve had ear ringing haha. Idk what I’d do if the capsaicin made it to my bladder. That sounds awful
It’s more weird than awful. It’s not nearly as hot as the lava poops but you can definitely feel it.
I had this only once and it was so bad. I thought it would only hurt going in and coming out, as per ush.
As a frequent eater of really spicy food, nope, I’m usually just fine. Eat more fiber y’all!.
I get at least 40 grams in a day, that doesn’t do shit for spicy intestines
I’ve had a couple of bowls of Tom Yum soup that did me in
Okay, but ice isn’t good for this;
it’s a chemical burn, andcapsaicin is fat-soluble. You ideally want something like milk. Meanwhile, on your hands (assuming some of it got on those), you want to cover your hands in oil and then wash them with dish soap (and once those are clean, if there’s residual burning, you can use topical pain treatments).
Edit: My understanding of the term “chemical burn” was mistaken. Thanks to @Nurse_Robot@lemmy.world for calling me out on this. I didn’t know it had to be corrosive or cytotoxic to be a “chemical burn”; I thought irritants generally were included.
Edit 2: Actually, looking further into this, I’m not so sure I was technically wrong at the level of capsaicin you’d be exposing yourself to with a Carolina Reaper. Capsaicin can be cytotoxic. I wonder now if very minor nerve death occurs at this level of spice. Either way, that’s not the main problem if it’s even happening; my comment was wrong regardless of possible technical accuracy.
I tried that oil thing the last time my hands got too spicy and I was super disappointed it didn’t do anything. I even tried again a few minutes later because it was so ineffectual but nothing.
It is NOT a chemical burn. It’s an activation of TRPV1 receptors. Normally these receptors activate due to increased temperature, capsaicin activation means they think there’s literally an increase in temperature. They THINK you’re burning, but you’re not. There’s no chemical burn; it’s reversible and generally safe with no lasting damage.
Your fat soluble comments are accurate, although it’s really time more than anything else that will alleviate the pain. You do not need to soak your hands in oil before washing, not sure where you got that from. Soap and water works fine.

I should clarify that my comment was assuming that, like in the OP, someone was handling a Carolina Reaper. Capsaicin being fat-soluble should mean that it dissolves into the oil and then gets carried away by the dish soap. I’ve never had to use this personally, since just dish soap and water has always worked fine for me.
The oil can also be more practical than medicinal: I know yard crew workers who slather down in motor oil when exposed to poison ivy – not to negate the effects of the plant’s urushiol oil, but to provide a visual cue as to when they’ve scrubbed thoroughly enough with soap and water to remove ANY oil: If you still see motor oil, you haven’t washed enough to remove the urushiol, either.
My point there is that soap already dissolves and carries away fat and water soluble compounds, being that it has hydrophilic and hydrophobic tails. Appreciate your edit and your reference, good deep dive! You taught me something new, thank you
It’s easier to get the oil to fully cover your hands and stay in place long enough to really cling to all the spicy stuff. With a few ounces, you can really cover your hands, get throughly under you finger nails, and feel out any spots you might have missed with just soap and water. The real trick is to use dish soap after. Hand soap doesn’t have the same oil and grease grabbing strength. It works like you said, but because now you’ve basically painted your hands in oil, you can really feel how well you’re getting all the oils off your hands. You’re essentially making a solution of oil and spicy solute, diluting it before washing the solution away. If the dish soap only gets 99% of the stuff off my hands, I’d rather that remaining %1 be mostly oil with some dissolved spicy solute, than %1 of the just spicy stuff.
I’ve worked in kitchens and I’ve done a lot of home cooking. I have never, ever heard of someone doing this. Additionally, it’s not good to dump oil down the sink. This is completely unnecessary.
Gordon Ramsey ate peanut butter for this purpose once and I’ve been curious to try that. I feel like it would work.
Yeah, that’s why some Thai (and other countries) dishes use things like peanut sauce with spicy dishes.
Straight butter helps. I learned this from a Hispanic family that explained why some traditional mexican restaurants offer torillas with butter.
Okay, but ice like he’s doing absolutely works. So many
idiotsmisguided poor sops think they can eat my savory jam (what I call the scorpion pepper puree my buddy sends me) the same way I do (large scoop on a chip).Milk just kind of moves the oils around in your mouth unless you chug enough to get sick. The ice I think numbs the tongue and adds another distracting overwhelming sensation. Whatever the mechanism, I just skip straight to that with people who try to copy my spice consumption levels

Bullshit. Your mouth would be 100% ok after two hours. This whole post is full of shit.
I mean I have a pretty high spice tolerance and in my cocky youth I took up a friend’s offer of some Carolina reapers and had about a nail’s size of the chillies and I was definitely not okay after 2 hours
Go eat some Carolina reapers but don’t use any fat/oil based substances to clean your mouth
yeah some nans have a sense of humor, would you rather have a silly lady or a vicious karen?
Milk helps.
Yeah but intestinal capscasin overload plus lactose intolerance is a whole nother world of hurt.
If I do that I bet my farts will propel me so hard I’ll break the sound barrier
Get a cape and put it to good use!
You only get farts from dairy? I wish.
Full on Wietrzyk!
big badda boooooom
If it does, which I highly doubt, it wouldn’t be significant.
The ice actually numbs the affected area. Just have to be careful to manage physical damage.
I know that milk can help a bit if you drink it before hand bc it leaves a nasty film in your mouth that can be a protective layer. Again, it’s not even close to perfect.
nah milk helps because it has fat in it and capsaicin is hydrophobic but fat soluble
Uhm what no. Something in the milk neutralizes sharpies. Also cheese, as funny as it is. I eat a whole chilli with a piece of Greyerzer on sundays. Because i thought the glass is pickled veggies and they have to get eaten.
cheese = moldy milk
Only some of them.
cheese =
moldyaged milkCheese = matured milk 🧐
Milf milk
It doesn’t even have to be aged you can make paneer in like two hours
cheese = milk
Can you imagine the surprise of their unsuspecting neighbor, who was just trying to grow some bell peppers, but which got pollinated with the Reaper?
New wojack just dropped

I thought that was some mold
I grew some reapers a while ago. The difference in heat between them and a standard habanero is comical.
My buddy brought a pizza to work. A local pizzeria makes what they call a Russian Roulette. It’s a regular large pizza with jalapeños… Except that one slice has Carolina reaper blended into the sauce under the cheese. He told us all the gimmick, we all laughed and circled round to take a bite at the same time.
That sly motherfucker had asked them to make the entire pizza with the reaper sauce. The heat was immediate and overwhelming, and all of us simultaneously went “oh god oh fuck I got the reaper slice.” And as we all rushed to the lone water fountain, we realized what he had done.
It was a great prank. We all ended up fighting over that water fountain for like 20 minutes, like we were trapped underwater holding our breath, and it was the only air hose.
Back before anybody knew about them I had a neighbor that grew peppers and offered to let me try one. I love peppers and didn’t think anything of it. Spent the next half hour chugging milk.
