No Stupid Questions@lemmy.world•Is there a reason why toilets are made out of one of the most resonating materials possible while also being made in a shape that makes a small fart sound like a damn trombone?
6·19 hours agoWhat I’ve read is that they tried a couple of times to introduce bidets to US consumers but the majority of them thought they were too weird. I’m going out on a limb here and say this has something to do with the puritanical streak we have in the US and that spraying water on your ass to clean it will somehow lead to something sinful.

14·1 day agoI once used a really nice bidet on a vacation to Europe. It wasn’t the cheap ones that are offered in the US that are basically just toilet seat attachments, everything was built in. It was porcelain but the sides were stainless steel. There was no handle to flush the toilet, but when you sat down and let your arms hang by your side you would feel a slight protrusion on the right side that your fingers would naturally press and out popped a remote control that would start the cleaning process. You could select the water temperature, the spraying pattern, the air dry temperature and a couple of other things. There was no toilet paper involved at all and you would be completely clean and dry afterwards. It was also self cleaning, and pretty much soundproof. I started my session with a loud fart and it was barely audible. Oh, and when we first checked into the room there were rose petals in the water in the toilet. So quiet toilets are out there but they cost multiple thousands of dollars. But they’re worth every penny.

Technology@lemmy.world•Student Teacher Sent a Private Snapchat Complaining About Her Workday. An Hour Later, Police Pulled Up to Her School.English
620·2 days agoThe headline of this article should have mentioned the reason her communication was flagged was because she mentioned shooting the student or the school. When you send a text, or Snapchat message, you are stripping out a wide range of non-verbal communication including intent and seriousness. So when someone sends a message with the comment that they might shoot a student or the school there is no way to judge these things. The last thing Snapchat wants or needs is an actual school shooting occurring that can be traced back to the shooter actually mentioning their intent to do so on their platform. With no way to judge intent Snapchat had to have a way to address these concerns. If an actual shooting was prevented then Snapchat would be lauded. Otherwise it’s spun like this article implying it’s a breach of privacy.
The world with social media is much different than the world before it. It’s changed the way people think, the types of things they think about and what they consider important. It therefore changes the way they act. Combine this with the ever growing surveillance state that intentionally wants to manipulate us and is able to do so at scale and speed and we find ourselves in the giant and dangerous mess we’re in now.

News@lemmy.world•US has used 'virtually all' of its long-range precision missiles during Iran war, sources say
13·3 days agoThis is what you get when you have an incompetent president whose only “strategy” is to use the military as an extension of his angry outbursts and an equally incompetent secretary of “war” who also believes the only thing necessary to solve the world’s problems is an army full of testosterone laden christian warriors let loose with full abandon. And if it diminishes America’s standing in the world or its ability to defend itself, all the better.

Lol. Not sure how the logistics of that would work out.
