It’s obvious that there’s 1760 yards in a mile.
There’s 22 yards in a chain, which we can all remember because of the 22 yard line in rugby.
There are 10 chains in a furlong, which fans of metric can’t complain about.
There are 8 furlongs in a mile, just like there are 8 pints in a gallon.
And 22x10x8 = 11x10x16 and 11 is easy to multiply by in your head, so it’s really very simple to get to 1760.
/s
this but unironically.
I kinda want a hexadecimal version of the metric system.
Americans choose to meassure thier dicks with the thumb of a british king instead of using meters… or GIGAmeters… there are no right awnsers, right?
Frankly you shouldn’t even be using prefixes anyway. SI units are kg, m, and s and if you need to refer to large or small units, you just use scientific notation. e.g. 5.6 × 10²¹m
1,000 kilometres = 1 megametre
0.01 Petameters
I mean the yard and pound have been defined by metric for a long time so it’s really just an indirect metric system so the USs feelings don’t get hurt.
My contrarian brain:
- 1 inch = 1 cm
- 1 yard = 1 meter
- 1 mile = 1 km
This is upsetting
Wait till you hear about the energy efficiency ratio
is that the one where they measure one half in BTUs and the other in KWh for some reason
One big cube for ice in my study room for me please.
Uh, no.
10 feet = 1 decafoot
100 centiyards = 1 yard
1x10^18 attoacres = 1 acre
I’m gonna start estimating distances in millimiles.
1 millimile ~ 5 feet, 3 and 23/64 inches.
makes perfect sense.
This would be acceptable
It only seems ridiculous because you forgot some intermediates: 5.5 yards = 1 rod, 4 rods = 1 chain, 10 chain = 1 furlong, and 8 furlong = 1 mile. So just gotta remember 12, 3, 5.5, 4, 10, 8. Super simple.
Rod? Chain? What is this bdsm?

Worse, its the imperial units “system”
No safeword, no lube
This explanation is fucking gold
You mean US Customary
Don’t make me math

Links and chains brings me back to my old drafting days. 10 square chains are 1 acre. 80 chains is a mile.
Boooorrrrrriiiiiiing
Do we need to post the same shit all the time on a biweekly cycle? Surely there is something actually interesting to post/talk about.
This comment is the most exciting thing I’ve read on Lemmy all year long! I can’t wait to talk about something else! Whoopeee! Yay!
Meanwhile the UK naming their currency after a sex act.
I’ve never thought of a mile as 1760 yards on 5280 feet or 1.6km depending on the context. The measurement makes me smile for some reason.
Sir, this is a Wendy’s, we measure in common units around here…
I prefer absolute units and natural units.
shopping for a new mailbox today, they used number of baseballs it can fit as the units and/or basketball for the big ones
1 acre
UK 4,046.85642 m²
US 4,046.87261 m²
1 acre (us international acre)= 0.999996 acres(us survey acres).
Even inside the US they use two different measures for acre.
Pretty sure they discontinued the survey foot already, but they had like five extensions so ¯_(ツ)_/¯
And three fluid ounces!
Is that because of the survey foot?
